Coopertition®

Coopertition® produces innovation. At FIRSTCoopertition is displaying unqualified kindness and respect in the face of fierce competition. Coopertition is founded on the concept and a philosophy that teams can and should help and cooperate with each other even as they compete.

Coopertition involves learning from teammates. It is teaching teammates. It is learning from Mentors. And it is managing and being managed. Coopertition means competing always, but assisting and enabling others when you can.

Gracious Professionalism®

Gracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.

With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. They avoid treating anyone like losers. No chest thumping tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended.

In the long run, Gracious Professionalism is part of pursuing a meaningful life. One can add to society and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing one has acted with integrity and sensitivity.

4342 IMPACT ON TEAM MEMBERS

Magnus Murray- 2016 President, Drive Team, 2016 Alum, 2022 mentor

“It has something for everyone, no matter what you want to do in life”

Sarah Ploener- 2018 VP, Chassis Lead, Drive team, 2018 Alum

Abi Rodriguez- 2020 Secretary, 2020 alum

“During my time here I’ve been able to see that this team is a place where everyone and anyone with so many different backgrounds can all come together and be able to work side by side and learn new things all while doing something we all love.”

“It wasn’t until I joined the robotics team that I truly had a chance to explore and figure out what engineering was… I fell in love with working in the shop and solving the problems. Every year our knowledge deepens, which is what being on the team is truly about. The success of this season shows us that we are improving and that we are doing what we are meant to do. Sure, receiving our first-place banner was amazing, but the real reward is proving to ourselves and our peers that we can do this.”

Rio King- 2021 Vice-President, hardware lead, drive team, 2021 alum

“I really like the way the mentors respect the students and let us make a lot of the decisions. They guide us but let us take control and that's awesome. We have extremely brilliant mentors”

Shakti Das- scouting lead, Mascot, 2017 Alum

“My experience on this team has been amazing. Overall, I was an all- around member, and I had lots of fun. This team has taught me that skills come with practice and commitment, not with immediate work”

Molly Hohner- 2019 President, 2017 Secretary, Marketing lead, 2019 alum

“I have learned how to take and active and passive role in leadership. I discovered that being a leader does not mean being in charge of everything all the time, and that delegation is a highly necessary part of leading.”

Jacob Thompson- 2021 Secretary, Drive Team, 2021 ALUM

“The team acts almost like a second home, it gave me a place where I could prosper and grow. It allowed me to have experiences that not many other students can say they have. I give my support to Demon Robotics and it returns the favor.”
